The 38 Essential Restaurants in Singapore
Where to eat in the home of spicy chilli crabs and “Crazy Rich Asians” — the most food-obsessed place on the planet.
A city of superlatives, Singapore is one of the world’s mostly costly cities to live in, but when it comes to dining out, the food-obsessed Little Red Dot surprises with bountiful options ranging from cheap to staggering — you could shell out as little as 4 Singapore dollars for a plate of chicken rice or as much as 450-plus Singapore dollars for a tasting menu.
It’s no secret that the 277.6-square-mile city state (and home to 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians) is and has been in the midst of a dining boom. What may be surprising is that the straight-laced city’s bar scene is just as vibrant. All that dining and drinking crammed into one place is a lot to take in, but this list of the 38 essential dishes and restaurants is a good place to start.
Farm-to-fork is a distant dream for much of land-scarce Singapore, but it comes alive at Open Farm Community in Dempsey Hill, where a 3,000-square-foot plot grows herbs like basil and makrut lime for the restaurant’s daily use. Head chef Oliver Truesdale-Jutras also works with a community of local growers for dishes like his Pulau Ubin-farmed barramundi, which is delivered within six hours of harvest, served steamed in dashi butter with black rice Japanese furikake seasoning, cassava, and butterfly pea flower from the property, as well as pea shoots and peas from local farms.
